What Can Be Done to Help Assist People With HSDD?
Many women are completely comfortable with their interest and desire for seuxal activity. However, some women suffer from a condition known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (or HSDD for convenience). With this condition, women are not interested in participating in intercourse. They have no sexual thoughts or fantasies. One of the keys for this condition is that the woman in question has to find this distressing. Many women are comfortable with no interest in sexual activity, and that’s perfectly fine. However, when a woman does want to be interested and is unable to, she is suffering from HSDD.
There are many different causes of HSDD. Some of these can include physical pain or problems during the act, medications taken, as a symptom of a disease, lifestyle choices, surgery, hormonal changes, relationship problems, or a host of psychological issues. Due to the widespread potential causes, there are a lot of different treatment methods to assist people who are trying to turn HSDD around in their lives.
1 - Counseling
Counseling can encompass a large variety of causes, and is typically one of the best ways to help treat HSDD. It’s the right solution for many of the psychological and relationship causes. Couples counselling can be a good start in helping to build trust with a partner. That increased trust can be crucial. There are counselors that are specifically specialized in sexual encounters, and they can provide mental and physical techniques to counteract HSDD.
One of the most troubling causes of HSDD is a past that features sexual assault or abuse. These issues can understandably lead to a woman losing their interest in sex. Counseling is the perfect way to try to come to grips with those horrible times and move on.
2 - Hormone Therapy
Many women who undergo menopause can find that their decreased hormone production leads to them suffering from HSDD. In turn, hormone therapy can work to fix this issue. Typically hormone therapy can come in a variety of forms. Pills are of course common. However, it can also come in arm patches, or sprays and gels. Hormone therapy can have side effects however, so it’s important to discuss every aspect of it with your doctor.
3 - Improve Lifestyle
It may sound simple, but living a healthier lifestyle can do great things for HSDD. Both physical and psychological problems can be alleviated by living healthier. HSDD can be common to women who suffer from poor self image or depression. Regular exercise can help a person improve their body image and improve their energy and stamina levels. Bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol can also damage a person’s interest in sex. By reducing or removing them from the body, it’s very possible that interest will return. Stress is one of the most common and serious psychological causes of HSDD. Managing stress levels by reducing work and money stress can help. Yoga and meditation can help!
4 - Alter Medications
There are some medications which are reported to be capable in assisting with HSDD. These have been shown to help with HSDD, but do pose some side effects. However, before any of those are taken, a doctor needs to look at the medication being taken by the patient first. It’s entirely possible that something being taken for another condition is the cause of HSDD. In that scenario, alternative medications or medication combinations will be looked at to see if HSDD can be improved without compromising treatment for the other condition.
